Album Review: Killitorous – The Afterparty 7.8 (Tech Death)

Going into this album, I was incredibly perplexed. The album cover looks goofy, the song titles are wild, and I think the band name is a play on the word “clitoris.” That said, the pedigree this band has is absolutely insane, it’s a supergroup with members of Annihilator, First Fragment, and Suffocation. Then we have the guest features, if I tried to list them all we’d be here forever, but we have members of Cryptopsy, Leprous, Allegaeon, Voivod, and Obscura. What could this possibly sound like? […]

Album Review: Beneath The Massacre – Fearmonger 8 (Tech Deathcore)

2019 was the year of comebacks in the music world, we saw the returns of massive bands, cult favorites, and underground bands alike. This epidemic did not spare the deathcore scene, as we saw returns for bands we thought we’d never see again, like Annotations Of An Autopsy and And Hell Followed With. The whole year I was hoping we would see the return of the mighty Beneath The Massacre, and just when I thought it would never happen, on November 29th they announced their new album Fearmonger, and now it is finally here. […]

Album Review: Afterbirth – Four Dimensional Flesh 8 (Brutal Death)

At first I thought this was just bad lofi death but as the album progresses, the more intrigue is revealed. There’s a strong The Chasm influence here and the premise seems to be a modern version of that with some newer, brutal ideals brought into the cosmic mix. They do well to achieve the atmosphere but the more straightforward heavier segments fall a bit flat beneath the intentionally muddy production. It works better in some places than others. The underlying thesis is solid however, something refined from decades of being a band and also having members experienced in other bands. Overall it’s one of the more interesting albums on the Unique Leader roster that you can listen to for yourself when it’s released on Friday the 13th. […]

Album Review: Symbolik – Emergence 9.3 (Melodic Tech Death)

An album a decade in the making and carrying influences from across a length of time, making for a pretty unique combination of melodic death metal and technical death metal, though with a blackened touch. The riffs on this one are addictive and varied but never without a sense of outlandish melody. This one will absolutely slap your ears about and demand many listens. Emergence comes out on the 10th of April. […]

Album Review: Viscera – Obsidian 8 (Deathcore)

I’m a huge sucker for cool genre crossovers, I’m also a huge sucker for Unique Leader Records, so basically this record was made for me. Viscera are a new outfit formed just last year consisting of members from Heart Of A Coward, Martyr Defiled, and Nervecell. So, while the band is new, these guys definitely know what they’re doing! Their debut album “Obsidian” comes out on March 6th. […]

Album Review: Defiled – “Infinite Regress” 9/10 (Tech Death)

I’ve always enjoyed Japanese metal, they just do it that little bit different and have a way of cutting through the huge amount of monotonous releases I hear each week. Infinite Regress is a well rounded album that is a smooth blend of old school death metal and technical death metal. It discards all of the new ideas currently circulating in tech death (such as the rise of deathcore and synth prominence) and focuses on bringing the old ideas into their framework of intensive mathy timing. The result is a pleasure to listen to as it sounds familiar but also grooves different. It’s well crafted. […]

Album Review: Wormhole – The Weakest Among Us (Deathcore)

Wormhole are a four piece technical death/Slam band coming out of Baltimore. Formed in 2015 the band have released one full length album with the second to be released early next year. At the heart of the band is the familial craftsmanship of the Kumar brothers, who along with the remaining members consist of live performers from bands such as Vulvodynia, Cognitive and Vale Of Pnath just to name a few. You can judge the full experience for yourself on the 14th of January via Lacerated Enemy Records. […]

Album Review: Xenobiotic – Mordrake 7.8 (Deathcore)

Here’s the perfect storm of pre-release bait for me – it’s an Australian tech death release featuring the artwork of Mariousz Lewandowski (I know how we all feel but this one’s really good). Xenobitoic are a tech deathcore band from Australia’s new metal mecca, Perth. Take a look at my Top 25 Australian Metal Releases article and drink every time I wrote Perth, then just drink recreationally. Mordrake releases on the 21st of February and features a couple of guests vocals that really make their tracks for me. Expect more of a scifi prog approach than a bunch of breakdowns – we’re telling a story here with an album of a higher brow. […]

Micro Dose: Blackwater Burial – The Prison Of Belief (Tech Death)

Blackwater Burial have released a solid tech death record with crazy good musicianship. The guitar and bass work here is incredibly technical, but it never feels unnecessary or wanky, everything fits incredibly well. It’s mixed nicely so all the individual layers stand out nicely. The vocals are these low growls with a nice bit of clarity to them. They are brutal and very well performed, but i can make out a lot of the lyrics which is always appreciated. […]
