Album Review: Dimwind – “Slow Wave Violence” 9/10 (Post Metal)

June 4, 2021 Kep

Some albums take you on a journey, and sometimes you don’t even realize that you’ve started one until suddenly something in the music shows that you’re not at home anymore. A moment catches the ear and all at once you look around and see not your bedroom, or your office, or the gym, but a vast ocean full of cloudy haze, or a stormy mountainscape covered in wind and rain, or an oppressive cave mouth yawning open before you. That’s what happened to me on my first listen to Slow Wave Violence. It was the opening of track 3, “Slow Wave Deceit”, that opened my eyes to the journey. […]

Album Review: Devil Sold His Soul – “Loss” 8.5/10 (Post Metal)

April 21, 2021 Ellis Heasley

Music has long provided a powerful outlet for feelings of loss and grief. Of course, that makes a lot of sense; it’s something all of us go through, including the artists we love, so it’s only natural that many would want to express those experiences through their music. The list of great works inspired by these themes is long and spans pretty much every genre, with several prime examples from the last few years alone. These include the consecutive masterpieces of Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Touché Amoré’s devastating Stage Four, and We Lost The Sea’s critically-acclaimed Departure Songs. […]

Album Review: Aerosol Jesus – “Survive” 9/10 (Post-sludge)

April 20, 2021 Ellis Heasley

Sludge, noise, doom, screamo… Brighton’s Aerosol Jesus promises a lot for their second EP Survive, but, to be fair to them, all that and more is there over the record’s 24-minute runtime. Its five tracks, whose titles spell out the phrase ‘Cowards Survive, Others Just Drown’, go to a lot of different musical places – all of which are utterly nasty and devoid of joy. […]

Album Review: Devastating Light – “I Have Already Failed You” 6.5/10 (Post Metal)

March 31, 2021 Melinda (Carcassbomb)

Depression is a difficult subject to approach no matter the medium. How do we address something that is so intensely personal in a meaningful way, a way that isn’t cliched or trite, and in a manner that both respects the human behind the depression and is honest about the effects it has on others? There’s no one right answer, and it’s likely that every person will feel a bit different about it. One thing is for sure, and that is that music is the most personal and intimate of art forms, and every person who gives voice to their struggles is to be commended for baring an extremely tender part of their soul to the listener. […]
