Album Review: Earth Rot – “Black Tide of Obscurity” 9.8/10 (Black/Death)

I’m sort of angry that no one ever told me about this band before. It’s got everything I love and nothing I don’t. The album is tailor made to my music taste and I’ve been sitting around like a dumbass not even knowing this band existed. This record has easily made it up among my favorite extreme metal records this year and Earth Rot are finding a comfortable spot in my regular rotation. […]

Album Review: Protosequence – A Blunt Description of Something Obscene 9.5 (Tech Death)

Protosequence are from Edmonton, Alberta which isn’t that far from me and it’s a city that I sometimes travel to for shows and such. I’ve seen these guys live a few time and they’re insane. The west coast of Canadian has a slurry of great tech death bands like The Hallowed Catharsis, Widows Peak, and Archspire. But even with a local scene packed full of great metal bands, Protosequence have always stood out to me. I mean, hell, even my mom thinks this band rips. I think that says a lot about how good they are, in a funny way. When shows start happening again, I’ll be very excited to catch the band playing these tracks in some sketchy dive bar. […]

Album Review: Ande – Voseenkuil 8.4 (Black Metal)

A black metal album that’s actually comforting to listen to? I never thought I would hear such a thing but Ande have produced such an album. Black metal, in general, creates three moods for me; either I want to go get lost in the woods for a few hours, I want to scream about Satan for a while or it makes me want to soak in my own nihilism. Ande have given us a record that makes me want to curl up in front of a fire with a blanket and a cup of tea to listen to it. I think it’s a really unique record in the regard. It’s been refreshing listen to this album while getting ready to review it. […]

Album Review: Beggar – Compelled To Repeat 7.2 (Sludge Metal)

This record is interesting to say the least. Beggar have made a record that dips its toes into a lot of different genres while never really submerging in one. Despite being a mixed bag, the record does work quite a bit better than I thought it might. My first few listens through, I found it a little jarring to be jumping all over the place sound-wise but I do appreciate more and more what was trying to be done. The band have created a sound that is sludgy and doom-laden while keeping a nice edge to give the record its unique atmosphere. Not everything works flawlessly but the band made a lot of bold choices and I commend them for that. […]

Asarhaddon – Reysa 8 (Black Metal)

For anyone who knows me, you know that I love black metal and most of its subgenres. Asarhaddon fall into the melodic black metal category, which just happens to probably be my favorite. With bands like Actros, Abigail Williams and Wormwitch releasing some of my favorite records of last year, this side of black metal has been getting a lot of love from me recently. I believe this is the band’s first full length and it’s my first encounter with them as well. I must say it’s an overall positive first impression, this record is solid. I’ve been listening to it for a few weeks now and it’s only grown on me in that time. […]

Album Review: Deathwhite – “Graven Image” 9.4/10 (Doom Metal)

It’s so early in the year and one of my most anticipated albums is already here. Some backstory for you, I first came across Deathwhite in 2018 when they released their first full length ‘For a Black Tomorrow’. The album blew me away and I’ve been consistently listening to it ever since. I’ve been waiting not so patiently since for news of a second album and so here we are with their second full length. I think I latched onto this band so quickly because of how much they remind me of Katatonia which is easily my favourite band of all time and they haven’t put out a new album in 4-ish years. When I first heard ‘For a Black Tomorrow’ I was instantly drawn in by this band’s likeness to Katatonia but I have stuck around because of the band’s talent and merit. […]

Album Review: Deadwood Lake – “Immortalised In Death” 7/10 (Black Metal)

This is my first encounter with Deadwood Lake and I have to say that, all in all, it’s pretty positive. This band is a black metal outfit that is on the melodic side of the spectrum. Melodic and atmospheric black metal is kind of my domain, as it’s what I tend to listen to the most, so I’m usually a harder critic on these types of bands. That being said, I’m pretty pleased with this album. […]

Album Review: Humanity’s Last Breath – Abyssal 9.5 (Deathcore)

This album came out of nowhere and slapped me across the face. Prior to this being released, I had never even heard this band before. But over the past week or so since it came out, I’ve been listening to it nonstop and it has quickly skyrocketed to the top of my favorite albums from this year so far. I can’t see anything else topping it as the unexpected favorite of this year for me. […]
