Album Review: Novembers Doom – Nephilim Grove 8.3 (Doom Metal)

Nephilim Grove marks the American death doom giants, Novembers Doom’s 30th anniversary. Indeed, an infrequent feat (at least these days) to celebrate. Thirty years of firm, ferocious and fanciful activity, breaking necks as well as breaking hearts. Having been released on November 1st, the album insinuates, all so subtly, the symbolic capacity that it possesses: the quintessence of the band’s career or their next step on their path… or maybe simultaneously both? Album Review: Golden Core – Fimbultýr 8.5 (Stoner Doom)

Fimbultýr is a dazzling lofi blend of stoner doom, hard core, death rock and a bunch of stuff. It’s an incredible work that hits just right. This is the right mixing levels for the genre, it’s an older more analogue sounding fuzz. It’s very much the Electric Wizard school of doom and it’s of the highest grade. There’s also grunge and post rock elements that are used effectively, making Fimbultyr an overall engrossing record that should not be overlooked by doomers looking for a harsher longer buzz. […]

Interview with Cold In Berlin (UK Doom)

Cold In Berlin have been playing equally atmospheric and abrasive live performances in London for almost a decade now. Starting with the essence of a post punk band and gradually absorbing the darkness of the world developing around them, dragging along with them a sense of doom. Their latest album, Rituals Of Surrender is a gothed up stoner doom album that releases on the 11th of October. I had a chance to hear the album early and very much enjoyed it, I also went back through their previous releases to find they basically started as an awesome band and stayed that way. So I’m very happy to present my interview with Cold In Berlin, an entertaining read whether you know the band or not (Just press play) […]

Live Shots: Lizzard Wizzard @ Crowbar Brisbane 27/09/19

This show was absolutely wild and hard to photograph. So much went on and I’m a big new fan of Wizzard Lizzard. Firstly they look exactly how they ‘ought to and the bassist is wearing the shirt for the same Carcinoid demo I’ll be reviewing this week. At some point a guest vocalist joined from the crowd and I was able to replace him at the front. The final song, some dude in a suit had to stand there holding the guitar amp plug into the amp and this is stoner doom so the songs like 7 mins haha. Big show, I’ll be sure to get to the front early next time. […]

Album Review: Gurt – Bongs Of Praise 7 (Stoner Doom)

Gurt are back, a sludgy UK band I’ve posted on IG in the past for their wonderful album covers, something they’ve kept consistent. Presentation is an important thing to Gurt and we are all rewarded for this. They have a unique style that’s difficult to pin down with elements varying between doom metal, death rock and punk and just a lot. They are a lot. Bongs Of Praise in particular is a weed fuelled doom/sludge album that will be a sure hit for stoner doom fans. […]
