Album Review: Nox Formulae – “Drakon – Darshan – Satan” 8.3 (Black Metal)

Black metal as a genre has progressed quite a bit since its inception. We’ve seen countless bands fuse the basis of the 2nd wave sound with so many different flavors to varying degrees of success and yet many prefer to stick to the core fundamentals. Nox Formulae is a Greek band that very much stays close to its roots, both lyrically and sonically, and with their latest outing Drakon Darshan Satan. […]

Album Review: Aeternam – Al Qassam 9.2 (Melo Death)

Symphonic Folk Death Metal may seem quite vague and too broad a concept to apply to any musical production. But when it comes to this Quebec-based quartet, it is in every bit expressive of the work of the band. Aeternam’s brand of music is a whole scope of Middle-Eastern/North-African (MENA) folk sounds, a grand symphonic foundation and a ferocious death metal that molds all these elements into one fine alloy poured into a gargantuan cast of awe-striking grandeur. […]

Album Review: Messiah In The Abyss – Genocidal Journey 7.4 (Black Metal)

This quarantine will be bring the rise of the one man band, and Messiah in the Abyss is proof of that. Raw black metal with dark ambient and dungeon synth textures all the way from Venezuela. Everything is done by a man who goes by the name Zaratustra the dead. His output has been incredibly consistent, as he’s released a ton of music in a very short amount of time, and from what I’ve heard, It’s all quality! […]

Album Review: God Dethroned – “Illuminati” 5/10 (Melo Death)

Do you like overt lyrics about secret society chanted over meldo death? Do you like the rhythm elements of Rivers Of Nihil minus the progressive flair? Then say no more, I’ve got you covered with the new God Dethroned. It constantly switches between being really heavy and being a bit limp. At its peak it works these two sides together to make a dramatic record. Not necessarily a very good one. […]

Album Review: Dopelord – “Sign Of The Devil” 6/10 (Stoner Doom)

Just earlier this year when I reviewed the latest Major Kong album I was asking why there isn’t more theremin used in doom metal, well here’s my answer. Another great doom entry with a high pitched aesthetic and a playful sound. Get ready to ride the satanic wave in a relatively chilled out fashion. It doesn’t exactly challenge anything but that doesn’t bother many doom fans. It’s more of the good stuff from indie legends. […]

Album Review: Fires In The Distance – “Echoes From Deep November” 7.8/10 (Death Doom)

A dashing debut album that ranges from gothic doom to melodious death doom with equal finesse. There’s a lot of nice tones on this album with what sounds like some real keys instead of symphonics. It’s very atmospheric and in the realm of Katatonia and Amorphis fandom which we all love. We’ve got a really nice piece of art here done by Caelan Stokkermans who I have covered previously. Not sure if they did the design as well but I love the logo and album title typography. […]
