Lucifungus made a pretty strong impression in 2018 with their debut EP and a bunch of awesome show lineups in 2019. I’m glad to finally get some more from these guys. A very riff focused doom duo with a lot of gain, the way it ought to be. I wonder if they have the orange amps. Definitely got the Melvins vibe.

This time around there’s a lot more happening on the production side, it sounds less raw but in a good way. A lot of the riffs are pretty average but they certainly set and maintain the tone. The cover art does wonders to do the same for their aesthetic which is very sludge driven and drawn out for the most part. I haven’t got a whole lot to say really, the art is just really cool.

Eventually with stoner doom you get more of what you expect and what you want from the product and that is the case with Lucifungus. You’re going to do your doom anyway so might as well make your doom of the day some underground shit from Australia. It’s prime stoner material for a demographic that is too stoned to care too much about variation or deviation, it’s your favorite drink and you buy it every time. That’s the deal, it’s a band that I bet always has fun live and is a good presence to have at gigs even off the stage. Real show hounds.

They’re a young band that are steadily gaining experience and improving their product over time. This isn’t the seminal piece that garners them worldwide attention necessarily but the next one definitely could be. To the true stoners, these guys are on the radar and everyone knows Australia’s where it’s at for doom and putting sludge on everything like it’s tomato sauce.

Doom as you would.

  1. Who drew the cover? Any notes on that – somehow seems familiar, maybe someone of comic book fame…
