A dashing debut album that ranges from gothic doom to melodious death doom with equal finesse. There’s a lot of nice tones on this album with what sounds like some real keys instead of canned symphonics. It’s very atmospheric and in the realm of Katatonia and Amorphis fandom which we all love. We’ve got a really nice piece of art here done by Caelan Stokkermans who I have covered previously. Not sure if they did the design as well but I love the logo and album title typography.

It’s a familiar sound but with a bit of a twist. Alongside the swooning guitars and crooning death vocals are electronic sound elements that are used well. It will unexpectedly become the rave floor for Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. It brings a lot flare into a genre that can very quickly become mediocre. The keys accompany the melo death guitars very well.
There is a lot of room for work with this debut LP, particularly on the chugging segments which can feel flat when going long. The atmosphere of the album is nailed but the riff aspect is a bit weaker. I think they’re another release a way from really figuring out their signature sound. I can tell they are going to be one of the serious upcoming progressive death bands to keep an eye on.

Presentation wise this is a solid first step into a discography with the right visual artist to bring the aesthetic to life. I’ve featured the artist Caelan before in my 2019 list of best album art. Getting good art from the start really helps to set the tone for whats to come in their future. Fires In The Distance will be a distinct band for years to come.
