Album Review: Tulus – Old Old Death 7.8 (Black Metal)

This is the first Tulus LP in eight years and they are coming back fully loaded. In that down time they formed the band Khold so they weren’t completely without practice. Now they’ve returned to their original project with this new album Old Old Death and I gotta say, it starts off with a lot more pep in their step than I was expecting, many of these riffs would be just as fitting on a blackened speed metal record. Modern black metal albums have a tendency to take too long starting up but not Tulus, they’re bringing the noise up front. The first impression from the artwork on the cover nails it. It’s a fantastic blending of castles, cosmos, forests, bats and a skull. You always expect one of these things on a black metal cover but all of them? They’ve cornered the market. […]

Video Premiere: Kari Rueslåtten – Sørgekåpe (Indie Folk, Norway)

Let’s end the week with something more serene to help us wind down from the various shows and album release hype mongering. This is a single from Norwegian singer songwriter Kari Rueslåtten who many will know from her early work with the experimental doom band 3rd and the Mortal, a project that played a crucial role in the early days of the metal scene – inspiring many future bands to be inclusive of female singers. The single “Sørgekåpe” is the title track of the forthcoming album Sørgekåpe out May 8, 2020. This will be Kari Rueslåtten’s eighth solo album to date and the experience is shown through it’s elegance. […]

Album Review: Abbath – The Outstrider 7.5 (Black Metal)

Anyone who knows anything about kvlt black metal or 2nd wave black metal knows Abbath. The man is an absolute legend. He was the front man of Immortal, and the corpse paint design he wears is easily the most immediately recognizable piece of black metal symbolism we have. After cutting ties with Immortal he formed a new eponymous band that has just released it’s sophomore album titled, The Outstrider. […]

Album Review: Eluvian – Prophetic Flame 8 (Melo Death)

I found this album due to the artwork from Luke Oram who has done a bunch of solid metal records in the past couple of years like Firelink and Slugdge. He can do a variety of styles really well like fantasy, scifi and horror. He’s done a heap of covers but has a small following, he’s basically one of metals secret weapons right now. As a kind of bonus you can only get here at Noob Heavy, here’s a time lapse of Luke creating the cover for this album: […]

Album Review: Mork – Det Svarte Juv 7.8 (Black Metal)

Just a quick review as I don’t have a whole lot to say today and I’m about to go to the ocean. So naturally I spent the sunny morning checking one of the latest black metal releases I’ve missed, Det Svarte Juv. Mork is a one man black metal band featuring Thomas Erikson. Really impressive work for one person, it sounds better than most shit I hear from your average 5 piece. For real. […]
