Live Shots: Blind Girls @ Crowbar Brisbane 27/09/19

A real nice surprise to find on a doom lineup, Blind Girls really stood out and I’m going to be seeing them whenever I can. Another local band with a cassette! again, if anyone has it and wants to sell/trade… I don’t know any bands like this in the area but it is exactly my jam. In the future I will be up front early for this one. I’m lucky I was able to even get the photos I got with the amount of people at the barrier. It’s primal af and perfect for my short attention span. […]

Live Shots: Chavez Cartel @ Tomcats Brisbane 27/09/19

One of the highlights of the night and I had a real hard time getting photos, at least there’s this short video that pretty much captures the dark essence of the performance. I definitely want to see them again soon, I’m sure i’ll have this camera figured out by then. It was a really intense performance, particularly the singer who has strong anti-stage presence. Paired with the themes of the music, makes for a very memorable and intimate experience. […]

Esoteric Tape: Sullest – Fashionable Male 8.7 (Hardcore/Pop Punk)

I’m just too excited. It’s hard to write this review while or immediately after listening to this record because there is so much going on here and I react in very different ways to all of it. This is a tape sent to me courtesy of Tor Johnson Records when I ordered Cyttorak’s EP I reviewed earlier this year here. I’ve ordered from them a couple times now and it’s always great, cheap as chips as we say in Australia. Their bandcamp discog is 3.25 USD. The tapes are like 2 – 6 bucks a pop at the most and it’s always the strangest and actual esoteric stuff (what I’m all about baby). This is Sullest and their tape Fashionable Male. An adventure into hardcore pop-punk. […]

Esoteric Tape: My Minds Mine/Sick Of Stupidity (Grindcore)

Splits can be done for many reasons but the ones I’m thinking of first and foremost are that they make for a great promo package for labels and is a great way for bands to put out music that just isn’t very long. It can also be a good way for multiple bands from one scene location to reach globally. Might as well put in with another band or two rather than add filler to create the new EP or LP. Perhaps they want to experiment with another genre or something like that too. The split is a utilitarian format for these reasons and many more. It’s collaborative and if all goes well, it’s a lot of fun. I’m always more likely to stick around for a B side if it’s just another bands A game. […]

Australian Heavypedia: Vahrzaw (Black Metal)

Vahrzaw are one of Australia’s longest running black metal acts having played under various names in the early 90s. While many bands have come and gone, Vahrzaw have marched on unable to be stopped by neither politics nor circumstance, leaving a long trail of releases featuring interesting artwork. Metalheads in need of an audio pummelling look no further. Their sound hasn’t been compromised in the face of an ever changing scene over the decades and after Husk, their ripper of a 2018 album, they are returning with a brand new album slated for 2020. I spoke to Vahrzaw guitarist Scott about it and the bands origin. […]
