But over the past week or so since it came out, I’ve been listening to it nonstop and it has quickly skyrocketed to the top of my favorite albums from this year so far. Despite having formed a year earlier than Behemoth, Hate has always been in the shadow of their more distinguished compatriots. As it is very common within this domain, they have undergone several (read many) personnel changes. But approximately three decades into their career, they have established themselves with stumping iron feet and bellowing screams of triumph. It was in 2017 that they released Tremendum, a paradigm-shift in their long career and a praiseworthy album for certain. 2019 marks a second step toward their new destination; it is Auric Gates of Veles that further emphasizes their trajectory away from the so frequent themes of sacrilege and toward a more deeply pagan sphere, in particular probing and reflecting the Slavic rituals and folktales, at the same time having an eye on lesser known tales of other parts of the world. This is a solo project. Now go listen and hold a physical copy of this beautiful artwork, then let that fact sink in. This material is of higher quality than most bands and it’s the result of one prolific madman, Rogga Johansson, whose metallum credits are longer than a receipt from Coles. He does everything on this record to great acclaim – his vocals aren’t as trained or technical but it serves its purpose perfectly. A far darker opening than I was expecting. Apparently the opener track is based on the story “The nameless city” by Lovecraft (read). The song titles alone say to me that this is a chronological story starting with a horrible discovery, The Gateway. There’s some kind of mythical figure and perhaps the revelation of evil, Mothers Of Monsters and Touched By Evil. Then that touch of evil infests or takes hold in the form of the Dark Passenger – possibly analogous of mental illness or possession. This passenger causes chaos and unnatural acts, resulting in Repulsion – of self and externally. The Gateway inevitable leads to Bodies Burning In Hell – The end destruction, death or suicide from madness and hell because of the corruption. […]
At this point I’m covering so many one man bands and it’s crazy the level of quality an individual can put out now. This guy has a bit of a history having released a slew of recordings over the past few years, a lot of which are well received. He’s clearly onto something. I’ll definitely be going back to check out the LP which holds a whopping 89% at the Metallum. This has 91% with less reviewers. Just for context, most of the time fully fledged and veteran bands get worse scores than this every day. There’s plenty of blackened speed metal here with zero compromise to the sound or intensity. I will preface this review with the fact that I enjoy melodic black metal and typically can’t stand symphonic metal of any kind. But this self recorded and self released solo project is winning me over with the symphonic aspect, it’s a lot darker than it’s typically arranged. This is a record that hit me so hard right off the bat in a way I have rarely experienced. Typically I’m listening in anticipation of an intro or a build up or even listening with a level of incredulity. Monolord broke right through that bullshit with Rust. It’s so immediately present with such thick riffs. They aren’t aggressive riffs as much as they are a menacing in their pure size. The widest tones around. […]
Sunrot appeals to me artistically and the brand of sludge on display here is exactly what I crave. It’s harsh and abrasive, it’s hardcore punk. It’s dirty and loving it like a dog licking its own arse with a course tongue. This is music to have nose bleeds to. […]
May has been a hell of a month for stoner music fans with a whole slew of high quality releases. I’ve been listening to this genre so much lately mostly because that’s where the art leads me and holy fuck what a first impression this record gives. Insane design work by Vice Ilustrados. One of the most impressive pieces I’ve seen with so much detail, coloring, theme and framing that is just spot on. Love the little mushrooms on the wooden surfboard. There’s a lot of doom to smile at here. This record is a great story for me because of the relationship between the band and the artist here being so personal and mutual. It’s a collaboration more than a commission with both parties crediting and respecting each other. It’s exactly what I like to see here at Noob Heavy where the art matters. […]
