Album Review: Sutrah – Aletheia 10 (Progressive Death)

I have listened to this album so damn much, every time I open my promo library I just have to hear it again. I’m addicted to it. It does so much in the perfect amount of time, 28 minutes of thoughtful, creative and powerful song writing. It has top notch presentation, production and it’s full of ideas that I find moving or stimulating. The artwork, which is among the top I’ve seen this year, is basically depicting me each time I had a revelation about Aletheia while listening. […]

Microdose: Venom Prison, Necropanther, Descent & Harbinger Of Storms

Four good albums, four short reviews. This week there’s almost a theme with double death/hardcore. Throw in some blackened thrash and epic synth doom and you’ve got a good time. If you dig all four of these then hit me up for a sweet high five, because you’re a cool person. Also I do this every week but I keep having to check the previous one to remember how to format it. Mobile users, tilt that phone! Seriously, or it will appear jumbled… next week I’ll probably put all the images on the one side… lol. […]

Album Review: Voidfire – Ogień Pustki 7.5 (Black Metal)

Voidfire are coming into the scene strong with a well presented debut album entitled Ogień Pustki, and it is a concept album “based on the theme of finding artistic inspiration in emotional suffering” according to the band. Immediately the most eye catching thing is the mysterious artwork, this time skipping Lewandowski and going straight to the source, a licensed piece from Zdzisław Beksiński made in 1976. It’s a bloody strong artwork to have and will surely find the band stuck in the minds of many this year. The sound on hand here is some tight melodic black metal for lonely hearts, with a kicking drum for marching into the gloom. […]

Album Review: Wardaemonic – Acts Of Repentance 9.5 (Black Metal)

Alright, what is in the bloody water over at Perth? The amount of bands coming out of there at the top of their game is intense. It’s unlike anywhere else on the continent, and they’re even on my favorite label, Transcending Obscurity. This label has good taste, every album that gets released there has some kind of quirk or progressive music ideology that separates the bands from their genre. This isn’t just another black metal album, it’s an experience equally capable of being a mosher and a thinker. It unravels unto your mind and stirs something in your soul. Acts of Repentance releases on the 20th of March and will be one of this year’s highlights just based on the sound and presentation combination happening here. It’s a high quality and well-rounded album. […]

Interview: Eternal Storm, “Come The Tide” on Transcending Obscurity Records (Melodic Death Metal)

Eternal Storm made one hell of a splash in 2019 with “Come The Tide”, a sophisticated album that made its way into many end of year lists including my own. I still listen to it every week and cannot recommend it enough. It’s cumulative of it’s inspirations while also maintaining its own identity throughout. There’s a strong sense of voice across this album matched by strong musicianship and song writing. Essential listening for fans of Swallow The Sun, Opeth, Amorphis or anything good that has the duality of melody and death growls. […]

Album Review: Grey Skies Fallen – Cold Dead Lands 7.5 (Death Doom)

The first thing which is worth mentioning in this album is its artistic cover. I am totally in favor of bands actually taking artwork into serious consideration and GSF is a band worthy of praise for their meticulous choice of album covers which are of esthetic value. This piece is a dark and sort of fantastical image of a land of doom. The shadowy and blurry atmosphere in which some human silhouettes and an obelisk are barely visible on top of some coastal rocks has created a nightmarish sight. It is indeed a glimpse into a cold dead land. Thumbs up to the artist Travis Smith, who has previously worked with giants like Death, Katatonia, Amorphis, Iced Earth, Anathema and Opeth, for creating yet another superb work of art. […]

Crypt Crawler Unveil Artwork And Single For Upcoming EP “Blood Sustenance”

Crypt Crawler are one of my favorite Australian death metal bands, their 2019 LP, To The Grave made it on my Top 25 Aussie Metal Albums list and I’ve covered them in various other ways. These boys are the fresh new face of Aussie death metal and they’ve just announced a swift follow up EP titled “Blood Sustenance” that is due for release March 13th, 2020. Pre-Orders are currently up through Bandcamp here. It was the quickest I have ever gone from seeing an announcement to purchasing a pre-order in my life and it’s only 4 dollarydoos which in your currency is probably like 2.6 dollars. […]

DEATHWHITE premiere new song “Plague of Virtue” and Info On New Album

Gotta love a band shrouded in mystery. We don’t know who exactly Deathwhite are but the music more than speaks for itself and they have been on my radar for a while due to the combination of their alluring gloomy artwork and the promise of gothic styled doom. I love all doom but certainly not equally, the melancholic guitar driven sadboi times doom is something close to my heart. I’m glad to hear so far that promise is being delivered on in a big way with this new single “Plague Of Virtue” off of their upcoming album Grave Image releasing via Seasons Of Mist January 31st, 2020. Album Review: Izthmi – The Arrow Of Our Ways 8.7 (Black Metal)

A wonderful black metal album that has both more harsh noise and more melody than I was expecting, this is not a middling release – it has a pointed sentiment and strong structure. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it a million times, guitar solos and sweet licks make black metal worth listening to. Even the tremolo picking here isn’t stale. The Arrows Of Our Ways is a very unique album and I’m not exactly sure what makes it so – perhaps the combination of mixing, vocals, concept and low af bass all make for the right cocktail. Izthmi have crafted an immersive and rewarding experience that releases via Within The Mind Records Feb 14th, 2020. […]
