Emma (Voices From The Void) EOTY list

Some fantastic 2021 picks from Emma who has a black metal and ambient project called Voices From The Void. You can follow her on twitter @SuccubusMetal. Listen to her latest release “The Catherine Wheel” on Bandcamp.

Defacement – defacement

I didn’t have any sort of expectations when I first saw this album pop up but oh girl was I blown away. The sharp ambient intro on the first track followed instantly by the blast beats and the echo like growls on the second track. Each track has ambient track in between which give the record a really nice pacing and buildups for the next track.

Midnight Odyssey – Biolume part 2: The Golden Orb

I gotta admit that it took me a while before it actually clicked with me but here we are. My favorite band has done it once again. Battle horns, catchy melodic riffs and all around a general amazing sound. Clear vocals mixed with black metal, synths and amazing ambience.

Gloosh – Sylvan Coven

The first thing that really struck me about this album was it’s amazing cover art, hell I even put the full version as my desktop wallpaper. Thankfully the rest of the album really does justice to the cover art. Fast guitars, booming blast beats, well executed vocals and the amazing cover art all pack this up as one of my favorite releases of the year. The only complaint I have is that I missed out on the vinyl.

Neptunian maximalism – solar drone ceremony

Everyone who knows me decently well knows I have a soft spot for abstract things and good atmosphere. This album or track fits both perfectly, it has a very wide soundscape that transformed me to another world.

Cân Bardd – Devoured by the oak

This album was more of a surprise release to me as it wasn’t on my radar at all. What I heard was something I can only describe as Simply beautiful. It’s very atmospheric, the drums are excellent and it has a really nice pacing.

Vomit Ritual – Callous

I’m not the biggest Death Metal fan there is but this release caught me by surprise. It’s fast, relentless and brutal and slaps throughout without putting much of a break on it.

Hekseblad – The fall of Cintra

I don’t really know much about the Witcher series but I was really excited for this when it got announced. When I heard the first track I was even more excited because it’s an absolute killer track. The full release was even better and I was absolutely blown away when I heard Obsidian star. Very much looking forward to more of this band after their killer debut.

Wharflurch – Psychedelic Realms ov Hel

Besides black metal I also really happen to enjoy Psychedelic stuff. While not a black metal release the first thing that caught my attention was the name and the cover art, I just had to listen. What I got was a top notch death metal release that throws psychedelic elements in between fusing together a very atmospheric and trippy release.

Aristarchos – Aristarchos

What struck me first in this album was the chilling ambient track that set up an absolute killer record. 2nd track wastes no time with the riffs and immediately throws you into a very atmospheric release that to me sounds like an HR painting worked into music.

Gelure – The Candlelight Tomes

I didn’t really have any expectations going in this record and in all honesty I don’t even remember how I found it. What I got was a really good ambient / synth soundtrack that managed to transform me to a long forgotten world from it’s first track. I’ve been listening to this one while I struggled to fall asleep. I can’t wait to listen to this one while tripping on shrooms, definitely worth a spin if you like ambient music.

Autumn Nostalgie – Ataraxia

I’m gonna be honest. I really, really, really didn’t like their first album so I didn’t expect to like this one as much as I did. So when I actually gave this a proper listen I was very surprised that I actually really ended up liking it. It’s a great sounding post black metal record that manages to have catchy and varried riffs all throughout their album
