Tape Review: Maggot Cave – Pub Full Of Maggots 9.69 (Grindcore)

I knew I was in for some grindcore but I wasn’t expecting it to be this good. The deal with this project is that if I can, I will listen to an album for the very first time on tape. It’s a great approach that leads to a lot of surprises and discovery. There’s things you just don’t notice or care about digitally because our attentions spans are just fucked when we’re given a screen. There’s quite a few vocal techniques used throughout the tape – even at one point offering a howling heavy metal scream which completely caught me off guard. Combined with the great use of comedic samples there’s a lot of appreciate here, most of which seem to be taken from films, sitcoms and Australian radio shows. They all sounded super familiar to me but I can’t quite place them, I suspect the opening one is from Reno 911.  […]

Album Review: Firespawn – “Abominate” 8.6/10 (Death/Thrash)

I didn’t have any expectations for this record, I just knew it has some killer art that reminds me of Dark Souls. Most things do and I can always fuck with that. It’s got the Swedish sound but it’s more thrashy than melodic, it’s a very rockin’ death metal record with great rhythms. There’s a strong old school element not too far from the path of Entombed but there’s also the presence of newer trendier ideas. I say give it a go because I’ve listened to it a few times and it’s stayed catchy over the course. It’s a modern album featuring some veteran musicians from bands such as Entombed, Morbid, Unleashed, Nihil, Dark Funeral and more. Very much a supergroup. […]

Album Review: Shadow Of Intent – Melancholy 8.5 (Deathcore)

After reviewing a few black metal records on this site I figured i’d change it up a bit, after all I enjoy all types of extreme metal, including deathcore. Deathcore is easily one of the most controversial extreme metal genres, because everyone has very strong opinions about it. I enjoy a great deal of deathcore myself, despite some of the more boring and generic bands and records in the genre. One of the biggest bands in the genre right now is Shadow Of Intent. Much like the genre they play, opinions on them are very divided. […]

Album Review: Archspire – Relentless Mutation 9.5 (Tech Death)

I’ve been meaning to review this for about a year now, it’s an album that I have been blasting pretty consistently since discovering them last year. They are most known for their insanely fast vocals but I’ve more enjoyed them for their song composition which is often very playful and fancifull – not always feeling beholden to a sense of brutality. This flexibility shows their musicianship and their showmanship. Spiritually, it all reminds me of Dethklok (if anyone still remembers Metalocalypse). […]

Album Review: Whoretopsy – Take My Breath Away 8.5 (Brutal Death)

Whoretopsy recently got a new vocalist and I have to say right off the bat that he sounds awesome. The style is far more hardcore influenced than a lot of the brutal and grind death still around, it’s a really nice blending of genres that doesn’t shift hard enough to ever betray what makes them so metal. From Australian accented hardcore shouts to full blown pig sequels, it’s all here and it all feels valid. Musically they are technically proficient and playful, just down-tuned to hell. They often qualify under death metal and grindcore in equal measure, some more purist metalheads might not enjoy this offering but I consider it refreshing and a heap of fun. They embody “Australia” in a lot of ways – often sarcastically which in it’s self is very Australian. Nothing here is done without anger coated humor or humor coated anger. […]

Album Review: Desecresy – “Towards Nebulae” 9.2/10 (Death Metal)

Desecresy is an interesting name, I wonder how many people read it differently from me, perhaps resembling something closer to the word “secretary” for some. I went into this with no expectations and as usual that pays off. This is a strange kind of lo-fi death metal that I can’t really pin to an era despite the band stating 90’s influences. They also use a level of dischord in their music that always brushes my fancy, it’s hard to explain but it’s a kind of tone not unlike a warped cassette tape or a fever dream. […]

Album Review: Abbath – The Outstrider 7.5 (Black Metal)

Anyone who knows anything about kvlt black metal or 2nd wave black metal knows Abbath. The man is an absolute legend. He was the front man of Immortal, and the corpse paint design he wears is easily the most immediately recognizable piece of black metal symbolism we have. After cutting ties with Immortal he formed a new eponymous band that has just released it’s sophomore album titled, The Outstrider. […]
