En Route Vers Le Grand Vide is a really tight post metal EP from Qeubec, Canada. As I often do with releases that complex me in some way, I’ve gotten some insight from the bands drummer Dieter who shed some light on the meanings starting with their name, “À l’Ombre d’Héméra means in the shadow of, so it literally means in the shadow of daylight.” says the drummer, “We think it fits well with the music because we try to play with contrasts, hard and heavy, but also fragile and breakable.”
The vocals make this album for me, it’s guttural but melodic enough that it flows with the instruments. It’s not weak like a lot of average post metal. It’s like if the vocalist of Isis was being tortured. The way the instruments are positioned around the vocal focus is super effective, it’s more memorable than most post metal releases in 2019. The cover art from Alex CF (Vocals & Art for Archivist) certainly helps
I also asked Dieter about the metal scene in Quebec.
“Quebec is very diverse, there’s a very big metal scene here, but also very focused on black and death metal subgenres,I think it has to do with winter, like the scandinavian countries have big metal scenes and long winters, i guess it’s the same for us here. for post-metal it all happens in and around Montreal, but that being said there’s starting to grow a small scene in Quebec city also, slowly but surely.
If i may namedrop some awesome bands from our province: Milanku, Rhino, Psomb, Discrvst, Lemp, Le kraken and Apes. Also check out d7i records. There’s a ton of quebec bands!
We have one upcoming show friday december 20 with Milanku and In Solastalgia, Eitherway at l’Anti in Quebec city.”
