Extinction is a new project best described as “eco-slam”, a genre of extreme death metal that combines their music with activism for various pro earth and humanitarian causes. The general concept is to highlight the ecological disasters caused by modern society. I had the chance to speak with the person behind Extinction about their causes and the new demo Anthropogenic Degradation of Ecosystemic Vegetation. One of the practices I find particularly interesting is the use of recycled cassettes and clothing as an eco friendly alternative to major production. The result is something a lot more personal and varied. Wormhole are a four piece technical death/Slam band coming out of Baltimore. Formed in 2015 the band have released one full length album with the second to be released early next year. At the heart of the band is the familial craftsmanship of the Kumar brothers, who along with the remaining members consist of live performers from bands such as Vulvodynia, Cognitive and Vale Of Pnath just to name a few. Whoretopsy recently got a new vocalist and I have to say right off the bat that he sounds awesome. The style is far more hardcore influenced than a lot of the brutal and grind death still around, it’s a really nice blending of genres that doesn’t shift hard enough to ever betray what makes them so metal. From Australian accented hardcore shouts to full blown pig sequels, it’s all here and it all feels valid. Musically they are technically proficient and playful, just down-tuned to hell. They often qualify under death metal and grindcore in equal measure, some more purist metalheads might not enjoy this offering but I consider it refreshing and a heap of fun. They embody “Australia” in a lot of ways – often sarcastically which in it’s self is very Australian. Nothing here is done without anger coated humor or humor coated anger. […]
