Album Review: Ellende – “Ellenbogengesellschaft” (Post-black)

September 13, 2022 Kep

Written by Kep Ellende – Ellenbogengesellschaft> Post-black metal> Austria> Releasing September 30> AOP Records Ellende has always been a project that communicated more emotion than most. The post-black stylings of the Austrian one-man outfit ebb and flow, using […]

Interview: Victor Vicart from Dvne (Post Metal)

April 24, 2021 Ellis Heasley

It’s only been out just over a month, but it certainly feels as though Dvne’s Etemen Ænka can hold its own with some of the best metal albums of the 21st century. Personally, it’s right up there with the likes of Cult Of Luna’s A Dawn To Fear, Gojira’s Magma, and Mastodon’s Crack The Skye. Its 67-minute runtime never feels too much, and there’s a real focus on song-craft, dynamics and story-telling. It was therefore a real pleasure to chat to the band’s guitarist and vocalist Victor Vicart last week. Check out the interview below where we spoke about everything from Dvne’s early days through to his opinions on modern sci-fi adaptations. […]

Album Review: Devil Sold His Soul – “Loss” 8.5/10 (Post Metal)

April 21, 2021 Ellis Heasley

Music has long provided a powerful outlet for feelings of loss and grief. Of course, that makes a lot of sense; it’s something all of us go through, including the artists we love, so it’s only natural that many would want to express those experiences through their music. The list of great works inspired by these themes is long and spans pretty much every genre, with several prime examples from the last few years alone. These include the consecutive masterpieces of Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Touché Amoré’s devastating Stage Four, and We Lost The Sea’s critically-acclaimed Departure Songs. […]

Album Review: Profond Barathre – “Tinnitus” 8.5/10 (Post Black)

February 23, 2021 Melinda (Carcassbomb)

Every now and then you come across a description or promo for an album that’s new to you and once you’ve read it, you just *have* to listen. Something about that description pulls you in before you’ve even heard a note, and despite not truly having any idea what you’re in for, you just know on some level that it’s going to be right up your alley. In my experience, at least, that internal sense is rarely wrong, and the first listen is usually an extremely gratifying one. […]

Album Review: Pipe Dreamer – “No Solace For The Soulless” 8/10 (Post Metal)

February 12, 2021 Melinda (Carcassbomb)

Alright! Time for some real underground post-metal shit. I forgot that music can have a rawer mix and still sound good. Pipe Dreamer has really played into the sound they have rather than trying to strive for something unrealistic. The result is something special blending charm with ruggedness. […]

Album Review: Cult Of Luna – “The Raging River” 8.5/10 (Post Metal)

February 12, 2021 Melinda (Carcassbomb)

Where most other post-metal legends have fallen or stopped short, Cult Of Luna remains to bring out new albums every couple of years. They managed to remain relevant well into the 2010s with their Julie Christmas collab on Mainer in 2016, then right before the new decade in 2019 they came out with A Dawn To Fear, truly showing no loss of progression and vigor. Now we get to kick off 2021 with a brand new release from the band, The Raging River, where they will yet again dance circles around most post-metal bands with a lengthy career. […]

Best Metal/Hardcore Of 2020 (So Far) (According To Carcassbomb)

May 26, 2020 Melinda (Carcassbomb)

Here’s what I like so far. I haven’t come close to hearing everything but there’s still time for stuff to make it to the end of year list regardless of release. Links to Bandcamp unless it’s a more mainstream band then it’s Spotify. Check out the Spotify Playlist Noob Heavy Best Of 2020 which will also be the end of year playlist with staff picks added. This is just my curation. […]

Album Review: Moloken – Unveilance Of Dark Matter 9 (Post/Hardcore/Experimental)

January 23, 2020 Melinda (Carcassbomb)

This is an interesting album. It’s somewhere between progressive death metal with a raw mix and elements of hardcore or mathcore, particularly on the vocal side of things. It’s hard to pin this one down to an exact essence, it very much does its own thing without necessarily considering where in the world of metal or even alternative music they would belong. I can only respect them for that in an era of redundant worship releases. […]
