This is how I like my death metal, with a healthy dose of Aussie doom. It’s becoming that kind of place, the kind of country that needs doom to seep through the cracks in the bleach white wall of the Starbucks joined to an Apple store. Album Review: Hellripper – Black Arts & Alchemy EP 9 (Speed Metal)

At this point I’m covering so many one man bands and it’s crazy the level of quality an individual can put out now. This guy has a bit of a history having released a slew of recordings over the past few years, a lot of which are well received. He’s clearly onto something. I’ll definitely be going back to check out the LP which holds a whopping 89% at the Metallum. This has 91% with less reviewers. Just for context, most of the time fully fledged and veteran bands get worse scores than this every day. There’s plenty of blackened speed metal here with zero compromise to the sound or intensity. I’m going to try to do this without doing a single pun involving their band name and hopefully without misspelling witch. Witch Ritual is some dense european stoner doom, real melancholic stuff. I haven’t heard their EP, but this is their debut LP that really cements their expectations high. I promise I won’t confuse Dopelord, Dopesmoker and Dopethrone since I’ve been listening to a bit of all lately. This is one of the most impressive collaborative albums I’ve heard in modern doom history. It’s a Polish supergroup in a sense. Doom might have started in the UK but these guys are all proving that it could finish in Poland. I’ve been pretty vocal about my love of Spaceslug for over a year now so I am pretty excited about this new track from them and getting to know the other bands a bit better. Album Review: Superfat – Guadal 7.8 (Stoner Rock)

May has been a hell of a month for stoner music fans with a whole slew of high quality releases. I’ve been listening to this genre so much lately mostly because that’s where the art leads me and holy fuck what a first impression this record gives. Insane design work by Vice Ilustrados. One of the most impressive pieces I’ve seen with so much detail, coloring, theme and framing that is just spot on. Love the little mushrooms on the wooden surfboard. There’s a lot of doom to smile at here. This record is a great story for me because of the relationship between the band and the artist here being so personal and mutual. It’s a collaboration more than a commission with both parties crediting and respecting each other. It’s exactly what I like to see here at Noob Heavy where the art matters. […]
