Album Review: Draken – “Draken” 8/10 (Prog Rock)

Prog as a genre has become meaningless these days. Half of all the metal/hard rock bands have prog somewhere in their genre and the other half write music that display characteristics of what has historically been called prog. Then you have bands that just call themselves prog. Yeah? Prog what? I’m a bit of a newbie to prog rock and I always thought it was basically Rush and Gentle Giant. It had clean production, was usually happy, and rocked in a more cerebral way. Then I heard Norway based prog rock power trio Draken and they’ve kinda changed what I thought prog rock could be. Dropping on March 26th, Draken’s self titled debut has a retro vibe that harkens back to metal and hard rock of yore but with a new, exciting reimagining. […]

Album Review: Khan – “Monsoons” 8/10 (Stoner/Prog)

Here I am, fumbling through the digital ether of Spotify again. Another day at work, another familiar album, another podcast. Tap, skip, scroll, skip, scroll. Then my little eye spies a dreary sky, with, wait, what is that? A melting planet amongst the clouds? Yup, sign me up. Tap. I’m instantly rewarded with a rubbery, chubby bass line sliding around under a shuffling drum groove. You got me guys. In chimes the guitar. I’ve found a chill place to let my mind float off through the planetary clouds while the rest of me does whatever earthly chores I’m stuck with. […]

Album Review: Ewigkeit – “23” 7/10 (Stoner/Prog)

A lot of fun right here, well, it’s short due to being an EP but what’s there is a very fun stoner love letter to the 70s. The thing that really ties it together for me, is the fact that it’s themed around my favorite books of all time, the Illuminatis! Trilogy. I’m used to a lot of whacky themes that are far more common than people realise (particularly in stoner), but I’ve yet to see any Discordian representation as of yet. If you’re in the know, then you’ll have fun cherry picking this release for references, artwork included, which draws upon Discordianism’s love of gratuitous symbolism. Be prepared for the most I’ve used air quotes in an article. […]

Album review: Vulkan – Technatura 8 (Heavy Progrock)

Sometimes it’s just the fraction of a second in which our subconsciousness makes us recognize something in the current mass of informations and decides whether it could be interesting. A band called VULKAN woke up my curiousness immediately when I scrolled by, and the beautiful cover artwork did the rest, so I headed over to Bandcamp to give them a listen. […]

Australian Heavypedia: Interview with Age Of Emergence (Prog/Stoner)

Age Of Emergence are a band from Newcastle in New South Wales, here’s a little tidbit from Wikipedia about the area: “Newcastle is a harbour city in the Australian state of New South Wales. Its plentiful beaches are linked by the Bathers Way, a coastal walk stretching between Nobbys Beach and Merewether Beach. The walk provides access to Bogey Hole, a convict-built ocean bath from the colonial period.” […]
