This is a big one for me, Dr Colossus have been my favorite Australian band since flooring me with The Dank in 2018. They combined good old Aussie stoner rock and stories told using The Simpsons. Fans of the show will have unlimited fun picking apart the references, I know I did with The Dank when I reviewed it. For this one, I’ll let the readers discover them for themselves since the band was cool enough to get me such an early listen of the album. Dr Colossus are back with a new LP, new merch and an Australian tour! […]
Brisbane’s Fumarole have been around since 2018. They dropped the “Mountain” EP in 2018 and have released 3 singles leading up to the ambitious concept album “ Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes”. The album was recorded and mixed by Scott French of Lovestreet Studios, Gold Coast. Mastered by Haldor Grunberg of Satanic Audio in Poland, this is a great sounding album that excellently captures the live prowess of the band and is dripping in classic stoner goodness. Got a light? […]
Four great albums, four shorts reviews, as always. This time though, it’s four doom ass albums so you’ll want to collect them all. Four very distinct flavors from all over the world, and mostly trios… why are stoners/doomers always hanging out in threes? Now you also don’t HAVE TO tilt your phone because the images are all on the same side, in theory. […]
Golden Core are a duo from Oslo, Norway. Their latest album, Fimbultýr, dazzled me earlier in 2019 with their genre defying blend of progressive and stoner metal styles. If you are not familiar then it is a fine entry point into the bands discography and will no doubt provide every kind of metalhead with something interesting and something new. The album appeared on my 2019 End Of Year List and I reviewed the album in more detail earlier in the year, so I’m very happy to have had the opportunity to the interview them. […]
Fimbultýr is a dazzling lofi blend of stoner doom, hard core, death rock and a bunch of stuff. It’s an incredible work that hits just right. This is the right mixing levels for the genre, it’s an older more analogue sounding fuzz. It’s very much the Electric Wizard school of doom and it’s of the highest grade. There’s also grunge and post rock elements that are used effectively, making Fimbultyr an overall engrossing record that should not be overlooked by doomers looking for a harsher longer buzz. […]
Endless is straight up ‘the shit’, that’s the most important fact of this review. It’s an album that has made me swoon like few others this year and it’s not exactly that metal or heavy. It is however, perfectly suited to the current climate of stoner rock and doom, bringing something quite zesty and refreshing, a fusion of fuzz, alt rock and doom rock. I’m hearing influences from Type O Negative and My Bloody Valentine, it’s super inspired and engorged with energy despite the doomy tempo. They nailed it musically and in terms of doom aesthetic – something Australia has been refining for some time now. […]
This show was absolutely wild and hard to photograph. So much went on and I’m a big new fan of Wizzard Lizzard. Firstly they look exactly how they ‘ought to and the bassist is wearing the shirt for the same Carcinoid demo I’ll be reviewing this week. At some point a guest vocalist joined from the crowd and I was able to replace him at the front. The final song, some dude in a suit had to stand there holding the guitar amp plug into the amp and this is stoner doom so the songs like 7 mins haha. Big show, I’ll be sure to get to the front early next time. […]
Dr Colossus are one of the best live bands in Australia at the moment and have one of the strongest stoner doom records ever released within the nation. It was a lot of fun to […]
