Album review: Myth of I – Myth of I 8.5 (Prog/Tech Death)

I have to admit that I wasn’t a big fan of pure instrumental albums for a long time, but last year I stumbled over some great representatives of this genre and something clicked. MYTH OF I’s self-titled debut album is the newest and very impressive addition in this wide field for me. The four band members (two guitar players, bassist and drummer) come up with outstanding musical skills, and they deliver progressive (tech-death) metal at its finest. […]

NOVENA release new video for “Sail Away”

Two months ago, NOVENA released their incredible debut album “Eleventh Hour”, which has melted with my player since then. The mix of styles is mind-blowing, but everything is in a natural flow. There are countless musical and emotional turns, it’s beautiful, brutal and overwhelming at the same time. […]

Aussie Heavypedia: Interview with Dyssidia (Progressive Metal)

I am really happy to do my second phone interview and it couldn’t have been with a more chill person. I had a chat with vocalist Mitch Brackman from Dyssidia who have just released their debut LP on the 17th of March after a decade of EPs and playing live with bands like Opeth and Katatonia. Their new album Costly Signals is an impressive work, I reviewed it recently here and I can’t get enough of it. It’s an essential listen. We talked about a good range of things like the writing process, interpreting art, touring in Australia and of course Covid-19 and the effects that’s been having on the creative process. Mitch says to keep your chin up and make content. […]

Album Review: Tommy Concrete – Unrelaxed 2 7.5 (Prog Metal)

Bizarre. Really. Also interesting and competent music. Tommy Concrete is familiar yet alienating, like an estranged family member or lover returning after many years. It combines a lot of old school heavy metal and power riffs with elements of sludge and death, funneled through a progressive metal kind of song writing structure. The themes are deeply personal and, much more self aware of behaviour than typical of these genres which are often laden with bravado and self assurance. Musically the comparison to Devin Townsend is most apt, both in relation to the sound and the unique edge that comes with the lone creator. If you support underground music then check this out. […]

Album Review: Izthmi – The Arrow Of Our Ways 8.7 (Black Metal)

A wonderful black metal album that has both more harsh noise and more melody than I was expecting, this is not a middling release – it has a pointed sentiment and strong structure. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it a million times, guitar solos and sweet licks make black metal worth listening to. Even the tremolo picking here isn’t stale. The Arrows Of Our Ways is a very unique album and I’m not exactly sure what makes it so – perhaps the combination of mixing, vocals, concept and low af bass all make for the right cocktail. Izthmi have crafted an immersive and rewarding experience that releases via Within The Mind Records Feb 14th, 2020. […]
