Interview with Cold In Berlin (UK Doom)

Cold In Berlin have been playing equally atmospheric and abrasive live performances in London for almost a decade now. Starting with the essence of a post punk band and gradually absorbing the darkness of the world developing around them, dragging along with them a sense of doom. Their latest album, Rituals Of Surrender is a gothed up stoner doom album that releases on the 11th of October. I had a chance to hear the album early and very much enjoyed it, I also went back through their previous releases to find they basically started as an awesome band and stayed that way. So I’m very happy to present my interview with Cold In Berlin, an entertaining read whether you know the band or not (Just press play) […]

Review: Black Mountain – Destroyer 9 (Stoner Rock)

Alright, I’ve reviewed a heap of stoner doom/metal/rock this month but none of them have started with this much groove and old heavy metal and hard rock sensibilities. It’s a very different beast from my usual review in that it sounds like it has mainstream potential and uses poppy rock hooks. Most of what I’ve been listening to it is the kind of dark and heavy shit that can bury your heart so it’s a nice surprise to have a new stoner release that sounds positive and proggy. […]

Album Review: Cyttorak – Underdark Invasion From Beyond The Shadow Of The Warp 8.9 (Sludge)

Man this album is heavy slick with blackened sludge. It’s fucking nasty. This is the true cosmic terror, most science fiction themed metal bands go the prog kind of stoner route or death metal. Cyttorak goes for a way more abrasive and destructive take on the theme, the true cosmic horror and soul crushing truths. The psychedelic melody comes in the shape of fuzzy ass feedback that work beautifully in the muddy mixing and primal performance. I was very happy to get this one on tape. […]

Album Review: Secret Band – LP2 9.1 (Post Hardcore)

Secret Band is the heavy side of Dance Gavin Dance and their first LP in 2014 reflected that more accurately. This LP marks their departure from that context as they develop a more unique metal orientated sound. The Metal Archives will have a hard time not accepting Secret Band after this one. I won’t go into the background with DGD, Will, Jon, Eric, Acceptance Speech and Happiness again, you can suss out my first review to read that stuff. […]

Album Review: Slugdge – Esoteric Malacology 8.7 (Prog Death)

Esoteric Malacology has some unexpectedly harsh death metal within the first part of the LP. With a lump of progressive elements and a thickness in the bottom of the mix that draws from their sludge namesake – Elements which are more thoroughly expressed in the mid to late parts. When the clean vocals also become prominent. Slugdge are a slug-themed sludge band but with this release the progressive death is really coming through more than anything else. The sludge is more from the mixing vibes. […]

Album Review: Birds In Row – We Already Lost the World 9 (Post Hardcore)

Birds In Row are one of my favorite hardcore bands so I’ve been looking forward to their 2018 release. It’s dark and emotive but it won’t shy away from throwing a brick in your face. We Already Lost The World is still angry and full of energy, some nervous. The vibe of this album is as much hopelessness than your average doom metal band and as much noise as your average death metal band – even going into heavier vocal territory than what is common for straight up hardcore. […]
