Album Review: Estuarine – “Nyarlathotep” 9/10 (Death Grind)

This album falls into the genre of death grind. And wow is it ever what it was advertised to be. I first thought “Nyarlathotep that’s a mouthful.” So, like the curious person that I am, I did a quick google search of the name of the album, which revealed the origin, Nyarlathotep resides in the hp lovecraft mythos. The epithet for Nyarlathotep being “the crawling chaos” I think it’s a poignant choice for this album title. There are 8 tracks on this beast of an album. The longest being the last at 3 mins. The overall length is 10 minutes. […]

Album Review: Undergang – “Aldrig i livet” 9.4/10 (Death Metal)

Fun. A lot of fun. There’s something Undergang does in their writing that draws you into it with all of your enthusiasm. Some parts of this had me moving like the metal version of those goth kids dancing at the underpass or the wacky waving inflatable tube man. On the other hand, they managed a few times to descend into an utter dirge that will tickle your dark. It’s a varied album that comes off as an intelligent deconstruction of death metal rather than blind worship of it. They have a deep understanding of old death, doom and grind – far beyond my own. […]

NAPALM DEATH announce new album “Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism”

Just a quick one before I go away for the weekend, as I know how many of you love Napalm Death. My relationship with them isn’t as tight as I’d like and this is another daily reminder that I need to take a deep dive into their work. I’ve heard a fair bit of their music and dig it, as well as the general message within, I just haven’t heard with much context or chronologically. Feel free to drop your favorite albums in the comments and I’ll start there. I recently saw Slave To The Grind, a grindcore doco that features them heavily, you can check that out here too. […]

Album Review: Benighted – Obscene Oppressed 9.2 (Death Grind)

Typically on this site I find myself digging into new material from bands I’m not that familiar with, and while that is fun and exciting, every now and again I get to delve into something I’ve been anticipating for months from a favorite artist of mine, and that is really special. It’s nice to take the time and really sink my teeth into something I’m so passionate about. On that note, today we’re talking about the new album from long running French deathgrind band Benighted. […]

Interview: Extinction (Eco-Slam)

Extinction is a new project best described as “eco-slam”, a genre of extreme death metal that combines their music with activism for various pro earth and humanitarian causes. The general concept is to highlight the ecological disasters caused by modern society. I had the chance to speak with the person behind Extinction about their causes and the new demo Anthropogenic Degradation of Ecosystemic Vegetation. One of the practices I find particularly interesting is the use of recycled cassettes and clothing as an eco friendly alternative to major production. The result is something a lot more personal and varied. Extinction is currently a solo project that is keen on assembling a band to take things to the next level so make sure to get in touch if you want to get involved. […]

Australian Heavypedia: Abu Ghraib (Grindcore)

I encountered Abu Ghraib on the Metal Archives while first scouting for this project and their band photo was so funny and endearing I ended up saving it “for later” which I guess is now because they’ve recently released a massive grind album that surpasses even their sublime memery in ability and entertainment value. There was no sign of this beast earlier in the year with just a demo to their name and hardly an online presence but now I’m convinced they are going to be huge, well, as huge as grindcore can get in this country. […]

Album Review: Mental Cavity – Neuro Siege 8.6 (Death/Grind)

Do you like death metal? Do you like hardcore? The easy answer to both of these questions is fuck yes! And so you’ll quite enjoy this dark and gritty stomper of a release from Australia. We can’t make any kind of music without throwing a thick layer of sludge on it and that makes me really bloody happy. It’s the cheese of music, you can put it on almost anything. Considering there’s already the presence of hardcore and death metal stylings, this album is basically like locking a bunch of random neighbourhood dogs in a room that’s just got a grimed up tarp on the floor.
