Australian Heavypedia: Warrior Within Interview

Warrior Within are a thrash metal band from Queensland, specifically the Sunshine Coast, where the good beaches are. Like many classic thrash bands in Australia, Warrior Within formed in the 90s by two brothers. The band has gained new members since 2016 and 2017 leading to the recording of several EPs which can be heard below. If you dig the old school speedy thrash sound with a message refined over decades, then give this lot a go and show some support. […]

Australian Heavypedia: Interview with Ploughshare (Black Metal)

Ploughshare are a unique force in the Australian underground by forming abrasive music ideas into music that is surprisingly palatable and addictive. I became familiar with them when I got In Offal, Salvation (2018) on cassette which is still one of my all time favorites now. Since then they’ve released Tellurian Insurgency, an EP that was well circulated in the wider metal community online even entering some end of year lists for 2019. […]

Australian Heavypedia: Interview with Age Of Emergence (Prog/Stoner)

Age Of Emergence are a band from Newcastle in New South Wales, here’s a little tidbit from Wikipedia about the area: “Newcastle is a harbour city in the Australian state of New South Wales. Its plentiful beaches are linked by the Bathers Way, a coastal walk stretching between Nobbys Beach and Merewether Beach. The walk provides access to Bogey Hole, a convict-built ocean bath from the colonial period.” […]

Aussie Heavypedia: Interview with Dyssidia (Progressive Metal)

I am really happy to do my second phone interview and it couldn’t have been with a more chill person. I had a chat with vocalist Mitch Brackman from Dyssidia who have just released their debut LP on the 17th of March after a decade of EPs and playing live with bands like Opeth and Katatonia. Their new album Costly Signals is an impressive work, I reviewed it recently here and I can’t get enough of it. It’s an essential listen. We talked about a good range of things like the writing process, interpreting art, touring in Australia and of course Covid-19 and the effects that’s been having on the creative process. Mitch says to keep your chin up and make content. […]

Interview: Brendan Auld (Snorlax, Descent & A Whole Lot More)

This week I got the chance to talk to one of Brisbane’s busiest but chillest musicians, Brendan Auld who is in a lot of great projects. He had a noticeable impact on the global underground with his recent release II by Snorlax but he is also a part of the awesome death/hardcore band Descent who are opening for Cattle Decapitation and Revocation in Brisbane on the 13th of Feb, Tickets Here. The following interview was transcribed from a phone call I had with Brendan and has been edited for presentation. It’s quite an insightful look into the motivations of the man behind Snorlax, a project that due to it’s dark sound and visual aesthetic along with the name, raised some eyebrows and perhaps even caused confusion. […]

Australian Heavypedia: Abu Ghraib (Grindcore)

I encountered Abu Ghraib on the Metal Archives while first scouting for this project and their band photo was so funny and endearing I ended up saving it “for later” which I guess is now because they’ve recently released a massive grind album that surpasses even their sublime memery in ability and entertainment value. There was no sign of this beast earlier in the year with just a demo to their name and hardly an online presence but now I’m convinced they are going to be huge, well, as huge as grindcore can get in this country. […]

Australian Heavypedia: Vahrzaw (Black Metal)

Vahrzaw are one of Australia’s longest running black metal acts having played under various names in the early 90s. While many bands have come and gone, Vahrzaw have marched on unable to be stopped by neither politics nor circumstance, leaving a long trail of releases featuring interesting artwork. Metalheads in need of an audio pummelling look no further. Their sound hasn’t been compromised in the face of an ever changing scene over the decades and after Husk, their ripper of a 2018 album, they are returning with a brand new album slated for 2020. I spoke to Vahrzaw guitarist Scott about it and the bands origin. […]
