Album Review: Lorna Shore – “…And I Return To Nothingness” 8 (Deathcore)

Man, my history with this band is dicey to say the least. I never thought their first vocalist Tom Barber was a good fit for them (despite him being directly responsible for the only good Chelsea Grin record) and I always found the instrumentals to be decent enough but fairly rudimentary. In 2018, Tom Barber left Lorna Shore and was replaced by CJ McCreery. I was previously a fan of CJ’s, so you’d think this could be where things turn around for them, right? Wrong. Literal weeks before the release of their album Immortal in early 2020, it was revealed that CJ was a scumbag predator. He was immediately kicked from the band, but myself and many others boycotted the record to avoid giving CJ proceeds. Album Review: Brand Of Sacrifice – “Lifeblood” 8/10 (Deathcore)

Whether you like deathcore or not, it’s pretty easy to see that the genre isn’t exactly in its heyday right now, and there’s a couple of reasons for that. Almost all of the biggest bands in the genre have either fallen from grace or faded from the limelight. That leaves fans looking for the next big thing, and unfortunately they aren’t really getting it, because young bands are really struggling with innovation. Album Review: Humanity’s Last Breath – “Välde” 9.2/10 (Technical Deathcore)

Humanity’s Last Breath made a big impression over here with their heavy as balls sound in 2019’s Abyssal, now they’re back on the radar with some innovations to show off. This album uses a lot of sound design to create a more unique approach to blackened deathcore that utilizes every instrumental technique available and even additional symphonics. You can see on their Bandcamp that they’ve been very busy producing tunes but also producer packs during the time between Abyssal and Välde, clearly very talented audio engineering from guitarist and producer Buster Odeholm (Vildjharta, Born of Osiris, Oceano). Album Review: The Acacia Strain – “Slow Decay” 8.6/10 (Deathcore)

The Acacia Strain are a deathcore band that have staked their career on making some of the most bleak, negative, and skull smashing music of all time. They also happen to have been one of the bands that got me into heavy music. They’re one of my favorite bands, and their 2014 effort Coma Witch is easily one of my favorite albums of all time. Aversions Crown is one of the bigger modern bands of Australia, among titans like Psycroptic and Disentomb. Much the same as those bands, it’s usually a good few year wait between albums so Hell Will Come For Us All is a much welcomed release to fans of sci-fi death. 2019 was the year of comebacks in the music world, we saw the returns of massive bands, cult favorites, and underground bands alike.
