What is it? When you hear the name Insect Ark it sounds it could be anything from grindcore and death to doom. Well it’s post metal. This is a super dense instrumental album that has a full cinematic experience to the sound. It washes over you like the warm onset of an opioid or day drinking. It will stir you like discomforting dreams in the night and wind you up only to release you yet again. It’s a highly rewarding listen each time.
I don’t quite know what the aim was here but it’s a very good album. There’s a quality to it where you want it to keep going on and on and it stops like halfway and then comes back in full resplendence and power. It’s a well executed ride through instrumental storytelling that rivals the prowess of Bongripper.
Over the days I’ve been spending slowly writing this article the album grows on me more and more despite not having much to say about it. My life is a fucking mess right now and all I can say is at least I’m blanketed by something worthwhile and poignant while I stare down a real narrow abyss. And I’m not even talking suicide, I’m talking everyday living and just starring into a void that is your life. From every scale, from comically fucked, environmentally fucked, socially fucked, locally fucked, domestically fucked. It’s like living in the film Eraserhead but the only color is this album.
That’s an alarming way to review an album, yeah? Well this one’s for me, I guess. No one tells me what to write about or how to do it, I spend more hours than I should working my ass off on my passion projects and promoting quality alternative music. Yeah I get press releases but I also just review shit off the streets, old school, like I how I started doing this whole thing. I don’t need anyone to validate the existence of this music and I’m not doing anyone a direct favor by writing about this one. Just look at the number and act accordingly, these body paragraphs are just here to explain that simple fact of a number. Most people just need the number.
I guess you’re probably wondering why it’s a 9 and not a 10 though? Well despite listening to post metal, mid-breakdown and not needing to validate it’s worth… It’s label. Come on guys, and I don’t mean the band, I mean the world. We gotta start punishing some of these labels for the sketchy lineups and bullshit. So from now on until I get the all clear, certain labels that I think deserve a bit of a slap will automatically lose a point to all of their releases. Don’t think that’s fair? Set up your own platform and work in favor of your own ideals. Be my enemy if you want. I don’t even notice anyway.
So there’s my highly conflicted review of the new Insect Ark, an update on how I’m doin’ and a new rule implementation. I’d say that was worth reading. I’m doing so many different things at the moment in various ways that the rules and parameters become blurred. I don’t feel like reviewing anymore, I just want to speak with music as my guide. Catharsis. Don’t ask me if I’m ok, no one is, and I’ll get by just fine without interference.
