Video Premiere: Kari Rueslåtten – Sørgekåpe (Indie Folk, Norway)

Let’s end the week with something more serene to help us wind down from the various shows and album release hype mongering. This is a single from Norwegian singer songwriter Kari Rueslåtten who many will know from her early work with the experimental doom band 3rd and the Mortal, a project that played a crucial role in the early days of the metal scene – inspiring many future bands to be inclusive of female singers. The single “Sørgekåpe” is the title track of the forthcoming album Sørgekåpe out May 8, 2020. This will be Kari Rueslåtten’s eighth solo album to date and the experience is shown through it’s elegance. […]

Album Review: Thy Catafalque – Naiv 8.7 (Avant Garde)

When confronted with the ambiguous genre tag of avant garde I toss aside all expectations because it can either be a complete waste of time or something glorious and I have no way of knowing which way it’s going to go. Naiv is in the latter category, bringing a rejuvenating sound that has an interesting swing to it. It only took the second track to make me fall in love. […]

Interview With Tommy Giles of Between The Buried And Me + Australian Tour 2020

Between The Buried And Me have been a huge part of my music rotation since they first endeared themselves to me with Colors in 2007, a progressive metal masterpiece by many peoples admissions. Since then I have eagerly followed their musical journey as they refined their sound and experimented with different themes. I love a themed album and Between The Buried And Me are masters of exactly that, so I’m stoked to announce that not only are they coming to Australia for an east coast tour, but they’re doing so with an ambitious themed double set. Tickets for the shows (Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne) can be purchased here through their official website. […]

Interview: Eternal Storm, “Come The Tide” on Transcending Obscurity Records (Melodic Death Metal)

Eternal Storm made one hell of a splash in 2019 with “Come The Tide”, a sophisticated album that made its way into many end of year lists including my own. I still listen to it every week and cannot recommend it enough. It’s cumulative of it’s inspirations while also maintaining its own identity throughout. There’s a strong sense of voice across this album matched by strong musicianship and song writing. Essential listening for fans of Swallow The Sun, Opeth, Amorphis or anything good that has the duality of melody and death growls. […]

Aussie Metal Top 25 of 2019

This list isn’t pride in Australia as much as it is a list celebrating musicians who despite being Australians, managed to successfully create and distribute their music. There’s a lot of barriers to musicians here due to a fucked economy, poor employment availability and terrible telecommunications infrastructure. So these bands deserve praise and attention for having the ability to create potent art in this modern western culture, even at the risk of crippling debt, or even worse, no one hearing it. […]
